Chapter 2: Structuring Your Jewish Philanthropy Program

All Jewish youth philanthropy programs share a common purpose of promoting philanthropy within a Jewish context. Each individual program, however, is structured differently, according to the needs, goals, skills, and wishes of its creators and its host organization.

Jewish youth philanthropy programs are flourishing in a variety of venues, including day schools, supplemental religious schools, private foundations, Jewish nonprofit organizations, Boards of Jewish Education, Jewish social service agencies, and local federations. Each of these venues has different resources available to it, which will influence the make-up of the program.

At the beginning of the planning process, it can be helpful to ask yourself the following questions. The answers will help to clarify the best way to structure your program.

Program Planning Questions:

  • What are your goals for this program?
  • How many youth participants will you include?
  • From which grades will your youth participants come to your program?
  • Where do you want to house your program?
  • Do you have local donors who will support your program?
  • How many advisors/leaders will you have and how will these advisors be trained?
  • What will the operational costs for your program be?
  • How many sessions will your program run each year? What will be the educational component of each?
